ROME (Reuters) – The vampires of "New Moon," the sequel to the popular teen movie "Twilight," hit the blood-red carpet at the Rome film festival on Thursday, with fans getting a 20-minute preview of the picture before next month's release.
Three young actors playing the mean blood suckers of the Volturi coven and the film's screenwriter were in Rome to promote the saga, part of a successful franchise which is drawing comparisons with the Harry Potter phenomenon.
In "The Twilight Saga: New Moon," teenager Bella Swan and her vampire love Edward Cullen, played by Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, separate because he fears he is putting her in danger.
While she befriends a werewolf, Edward retreats to Italy, where he meets the Volturi -- the powerful law enforcers of the vampire world.
Screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg said the fascination of young people -- particularly teenage girls -- with the Twilight films, based on the best-selling romance novels by Stephenie Meyer, came from the fact that they "speak to universal themes and experiences of heartbreak and first love.
"Everyone has gone through it or is going through it ... I think also this very chaste sexuality, it is very passionate but safe. So it's very tantalizing," she told Reuters in an interview.
"I think Harry Potter is much more fantastical. The Twilight series has its fantastic elements very grounded in reality, it's set in reality, so they are very different."
The first Twilight movie was a smash hit that grossed $383 million worldwide. "New Moon" is more emotional, has more action and gives greater space to the more violent, dark side of the vampire world -- like the Volturi clan.
"There is this scene where this dude gets his face torn off and it was pretty fun to sit and watch that happen, to be evil and smile at it. That's my favorite scene," said Jamie Campbell Bower, who plays one of the Volturi leaders.
Among teenagers, 20-year-old Campbell Bower is already a rising star in his own right -- he is also set to appear in the "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" films.
But like the other actors who flew to Rome, he said he felt the pressure of millions of fans of the Twilight stories, and the media circus that goes with it.
Lead actors Pattinson and Stewart, who were not in Rome, became instant celebrities after the first film.
Tickets for the preview of "New Moon" were sold out in just a few hours and hundreds of screaming teenagers braved the rain to greet the three Volturi on the red carpet.
"Going in to do a film like Twilight, when they've already done the first one, is a daunting experience, let alone without the fan base," Campbell Bower told Reuters.
"So when you throw the fan base in there, there is a definite pressure. I hope that I have done as much as I can to make the fans happy. I did the best I could and if you hate it, I'm really sorry."
The film's U.S. release is scheduled for November 20.

“Twilight” fans asked, and we got the answer.
Gossip Cop has learned that Robert Pattinson will be a guest on “Ellen” in a new episode airing November 20, the day of the “New Moon” premiere. A highly, highly placed source confirmed Pattinson’s appearance to Gossip Cop. The interview, however, will be taped on November 17.
VF.com: How did you get the part of Wolf Pack leader, Sam Uley?
Chaske Spencer: It was one of the weirdest auditions I’ve done. We put it on tape, and usually the process is: you meet the casting director, get a callback, then you meet the producer and director. This just went straight from tape. I auditioned for all of the parts of the Wolf Pack; they called me back and told me what part I had. Also, I didn’t really know who [the character] was because I didn’t know much about Twilight. Then I figured it out and said, “Wow, that’s a really good part.” It’s amazing. I’ve never gotten a part like that before.
Once you got the part, did you go back and read the books?
Yeah, I started with New Moon. Then I started dabbling in Eclipse because there’s a lot of back-story to my character. I really tried to relate to those characters, do my job … and then go to the gym.
How much time did you have between finding out you got the role and actually starting shooting?
Not much—about three weeks. They got us a trainer and really started throwing us into the work, into working out, which was with a gentleman who helped out on 300. I was pretty psyched about that; it was really tough. I was [already] in shape, but when he got his hands on me, it was a whole different beast altogether. I put on 25 pounds in those two months. It just happened—one day, I stepped out of the shower, took a look at myself, and I didn’t recognize my own body.
You all went through this together as a pack, too.
Yeah, that was the one thing that was really cool; it did bond us. We’re unknowns, and we couldn’t tell anyone for a month that we were cast. So we just talked to each other, made sure we kept each other in check, got competitive with one another. It was like [we were] brothers. I gained so many family members through this, which I’m really grateful for.
So you were this unknown actor living in New York who suddenly found himself on the set of this huge studio blockbuster. What was that like?
It’s so surreal, I mean, I’m feeling it right now! On the film sets of New Moon and Eclipse, I feel safe. It’s like you’re in the center of the hurricane, but outside is where it starts to get chaotic. I would say that, in the last few days, I started noticing that I’m in this huge franchise. I’m going to be in one of the biggest movies of the year, and it’s a little surreal, frightening, and exciting all together. It’s like one big roller-coaster ride.
What are you doing to prepare for it?
No one can give you a book on how to deal with it. There’s not much you can do about it except for just having a good head on your shoulders. You have to go on your own and figure it out.
Like many of the other wolves, you have your own Twitter page, too.
It’s really cool. It’s like being in this rock band. It’s nothing like I’ve ever done before on any film or play—you really interact with the fans. I Twitter for the Twilight fans. I can write where I’m going, what I’m doing—I try to keep it general so I don’t give too much away—and the fans are great! They’re really excited about it; some even know more about me than I do myself!
Speaking of rock bands, Kiowa [Gordon] said you got him listening to Phoenix and Grizzly Bear.
Kiowa and Tyson Houseman are really into music, and we talk about that. I’m really into discovering new music. I’m a drummer, and I live with a musician—he’s in a band called The 5 O’Clock Heroes. I’m not just plugging him because he’s my roommate; his band is really good. He introduces me to all of the cool new bands, and we’ve had musicians coming over to our apartment for a while now. I like this new cat, Liam Finn, who I heard about in Australia. I also just got the New Moon soundtrack, and I’m really impressed! I think it’s amazing. I’ve been listening to it all day actually. I like Band of Skulls, and I’ve been a fan of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club for years now. This is going to be my album for the month.
What did the wolves listen to during workouts?
I brought my iPod in, and I had tracks that would help us get through the workout. We played the Beastie Boys’ “Sabotage,” Metallica’s “Orion,” ACDC—that really pumped us up—some Guns N’ Roses, Soundgarden, Nirvana. I like to workout to a lot of hip-hop, too.
You’re the oldest wolf in the pack.
Yeah, and it’s funny: I play the alpha wolf, the leader, and I kind of fell into that role. I don’t know how that happens. But I am the oldest—I had a few films under my belt—and I kind of helped some of the other guys. I’m very protective of them. If anyone tried to hurt them, I’d probably go ballistic. They’re good guys. We take care of one another. It was like freshman coming into high school; we were the new group. We all come from different backgrounds, too. We’re Native Americans and we have a different outlook on things. We didn’t come to mess around; we came with our A-game, and we definitely made sure our presence was known.
What is your Native American background?
I’m Lakota Sioux. What’s cool is that Stephenie [Meyer]’s written this amazing story that is more contemporary Native American. It’s not like I was wearing leather and feathers, which I’ve been used to doing. I didn’t have to go too much into my own background.
You said in your Twitter feed: “I love being a wolf!”
[Laughs] I like my role. When I was a kid, I was into the Anne Rice novels, but I never got to discover werewolves until this. What I like is that it’s given me a new body, actually. The workouts and all of that stuff—who doesn’t want to be a werewolf? (It’s tongue-in-cheek when I say stuff like that.)
When this is all over, what kind of movies do you want to make?
I just look at the kind of actors I really like; I like Gene Hackman. The actors I admire are character actors. I just want to do really good work. I mean, this is huge. I really don’t know what I can do after this! Go the independent route maybe.
Let’s do some wordplay. Please give one word to describe each of the actors you work with in New Moon, starting with Alex Meraz [“Paul”].
Primal.
Bronson Pelletier [“Jared”].
Jokester.
Kristen Stewart [“Bella Swan”].
Fighter.
Gil Birmingham [“Billy Black”].
Heart-and-soul.
Tyson Houseman [“Quil Ateara”].
Intelligent.
Kiowa Gordon [“Embry Call”].
Goofy.
Taylor Lautner [“Jacob Black”].

------Jackson Rathbone Discusses Jasper's 'Eclipse' Flashbacks
Actor's big scenes in third 'Twilight' film involve riding horses, training Cullens to fight.
BOSTON — If "New Moon" is the low point of Jasper Hale's presence in the "Twilight" saga, then "Eclipse" is the high. When MTV News caught up with Jackson Rathbone last week on the set of his indie flick "Girlfriend," he still had two weeks of "Eclipse" filming left. Much of his shooting had been completed, and he shared some of the big scenes he had already finished.
"I got to go back into my old roots, got to ride some horses again, which was nice. Got to put these riding boots to use, which is good," Rathbone said, motioning to his boots. "I actually can ride a horse."
In "Eclipse," Jasper tells Bella (Kristen Stewart) about his life before he met Carlisle Cullen (Peter Facinelli). Unlike Edward (Robert Pattinson), Rosalie (Nikki Reed), Esme (Elizabeth Reaser) and Emmett (Kellan Lutz), both Jasper and Alice Cullen (Ashley Greene) were transformed into vampires before they met Carlisle. Jasper plays a large role in the third installment of the series because he is the only vampire among them who knows how to combat the newborn vampire army Victoria (now played by Bryce Dallas Howard) is building.
Jasper's backstory, which takes place during the Civil War, will be told through flashbacks, Rathbone confirmed. Though the explanation of Jasper's history takes up a good portion of the novel, he hinted that the film version would be shorter.
"It was just really fantastic to get to delve in there and to get to don all the Civil War regalia and whatnot. That was a pleasure," he said. "I had to wear this wool suit of a major, cavalry major. "I got the big hat and everything. Hop off the horse, bow to these ladies, and then I get eaten. And then I get turned!"
There will also be flashbacks of Jasper training newborn vampires while he's still "a bad dude, a bad vampire," Rathbone said. He added that training from another film, "The Last Airbender," including wrestling, hand-to-hand combat and weapon play, was useful since there wasn't much time to prepare for the fight scenes in "Eclipse." But Rathbone was quick to clarify none of the vampires' combat scenes would be martial art-y.
Rathbone said Jasper will tell Bella his story after a training sequence where he helps the Cullens prepare for the newborn army that's approaching.
"It's actually the first time Bella and Jasper interact that's longer than one sentence, or me attacking her," Rathbone said, laughing. "Kristen and I kept saying it was really nice to get to work together because we had never had a chance to really, kind of, like, get into some dialogue."

Biting off more than he can chew?
Bela Lugosi never had to deal with hordes of screaming teenage girls like Robert Pattinson does.
But that's just the appeal of Edward Cullen, the brooding vampire Pattinson plays onscreen and the love interest in Stephenie Meyer's "Twilight" book series. Last fall's "Twilight" movie began the love affair between Edward and the shy human girl Bella (Kristen Stewart); the sequel, "New Moon," out Nov. 20, finds Edward banishing himself from Bella's life.
To get a modern image of a vampire, Pattinson initially watched movies such as "Interview With the Vampire" and "Blade." But he really discovered who Edward was by researching outcast roles not involving the undead. "Rebel Without a Cause was a big influence on the first ["Twilight" film] -- it influenced the hairdo and stuff," Pattinson says, laughing. "In lots of ways, it has a very similar character arc: An everyday girl brings this relatively strange individual out of his slump."
A James Dean type -- that is, Pattinson -- always attracts teenage girls in flocks. "It's like The Birds, with teenage girls," says "New Moon" director Chris Weitz. "You turn around, and there would be a line of girls standing there."
Pattinson, 23, a native of London, takes all the swooning over his lanky, 6-foot-tall frame and wildly styled hair in stride. "I'm not entirely sure what it is," he says. "I'll probably realize afterward how I could have controlled it a little bit more. But I am still like a deer in headlights."
And there's the fact that many haven't yet separated Pattinson the actor from Edward the vampire. "Right at the beginning, everyone just called me Edward," he says. "I don't really mind either way. There's something about that character that, for some reason, has sparked an interest in massive degrees in so many different people.
"If you want to compete with your own character, you have to really fight. I don't know if I could be bothered to fight," he says, chuckling again. "I just let it go by."
For those who care to look so far back, there was a time when Robert Pattinson was not yet Edward Cullen. Jackson Rathbone, who has since been cast as fellow Cullen, Jasper Hale, at one point had been pretty close to landing the leading male role himself."I was a choice. I don't think I was [Catherine Hardwick's] first choice," Jackson told us in a recent interview on the set of his new movie, "Girlfriend."
But he was a definite choice for author Stephenie Meyer, who had included Jackson on her favorite suggestions list of possible Edwards on her website in July, 2007 before casting was finished (Robert Pattinson was one of the more popular suggestions, but Henry Cavill was her first choice). Jackson emphasized he felt, in both cases, Rob was the first choice once the actors had been narrowed down.
"I think he's the best man for the job," Jackson said. "I wouldn't have another Edward Cullen than Robert Pattinson. He's perfect."
Had the tables turned and Jackson got the part, it could have been his face lining the tabloid articles he told us he liked to laugh at. Somehow, when he informed us, "I love playing Jasper," we're also assuming he loved missing a huge, gossip-driven bullet (Jackson talks more about that "bullet," er the endless Robert Pattinson- Kristen Stewart romance rumors, at MTV.com).
